This Is Our Story
Acre Luxury Lodges is nestled on our family farm. Here we rear our Welsh Mule Sheep flock, Hereford Cross Cattle and calves, as well as corn. The Hamer family has been farming here since 1935 and Richard proudly carries on the family traditions with his wife Annabel; Sons Tom and Ed and daughter Grace. Mars, Bailey and Elvis (the cat) head up security for the farm - well Mars does, Bailey tends to be over eager to meet and greet the new guests. Elvis - well he has left the building!
Richard's grandfather - Dick Hamer was first drawn to Rough Close farm for its ideal position, situated in the heart of the Radnor Valley, surrounded by the mighty rolling hills - Whimble, Mynd and Smatcher. Dick married Daisy and 4 children arrived not too long after. Richard's Dad (Jim) was number 3 - and he farmed here from the moment he could reach his wellies, before marrying Ruth and settling down to start a family of his own. Following in Jim's wellie-steps...Richard has been 'head of the well*' for the last ten years, but in true Radnor fashion, he has had his hands in the earth of the valley since day dot. As the family grew, with Tom, Ed and Grace popping along, so did the farm with Rowbatch joining the brood in 1964. Under Richard and Annabel's careful and considerate stewardship of the Land, all of this rich history will be passed onto the next generation and beyond, for what they hope will be many more years of sustainable farming and considerate land management by the Hamer family.
We are thrilled to be able to showcase what we consider to be the most spectacular views and vistas in the valley - direct quote from Richard himself! We welcome you to our family farm and hope that your stay here gives you as many special and lasting memories as we are fortunate enough to have ourselves.
Upper Close was the first receiver of guests in 2016, since then the farm has welcomed many families, couples and groups of friends in our lodges at Rowbatch - Offas Dyke and Red kite. Middle Hanter is the former baby in the collection, opening to visitors in March 2022. Since then, we have a new baby, Larchwood Lodge, accepting its first guests in April 2023.
All of our stays are lovingly cared for and maintained by the family - this is very much a family oriented adventure, although Elvis still refuses to pull his weight! Richard will be chopping your wood, Annabel setting your fires ready for a warm welcome on arrival, Tom and Ed will be here, there and everywhere on the farm maintaining the land and the welfare of the animals. If you're wondering about Grace - she is off at University and we couldn't be prouder.
Here at Acre Luxury Lodges, you can immerse yourself in the great outdoors - or not! Whatever your interests, be it long walks in the rolling welsh valleys, hiking beautiful border hill ranges or just cosying up in front of the lit log burning stoves with a good book and a glass of something naughty - Acre Luxury lodges is here to make your stay memorable.
We look forward to welcoming you soon.
Richard, Annabel, Tom, Ed & Grace
